Black Friday
The state of online poker regulations in America continues to be chaotic as Utah has become the first state to opt out of any future federal online poker regulations. In the past year many states have considered and even come close to making intrastate online poker legal for the residents of their respective states. Several states have taken similar stances to Utah but have not completely shut down the idea of online poker in the future. If you live in Utah, you won’t be able to make a Carbon Poker download even if poker becomes federally regulated.
Mississippi recently had a bill that would’ve seen legalized and regulated internet gaming within the state borders fall short in a committee vote. Iowa’s Senate passed a bill in their state by a vote of 29-20, but the House of Representatives shot it down for the time being. New Jersey saw their Governor Chris Christie veto an online poker bill. Nothing has been achieved lately on the online poker front in the Garden State and talks have slowed. It looks like it’s…
Read MoreIf you used to play on the best US poker sites, you will know that it has been a tough last year for internet poker in the U.S.A. Black Friday hit players hard. This was followed by the ensuing problems with Full Tilt Poker and the subsequent issues of players being unable to access their money.
With the online poker landscape in America effectively leveled, just a few viable options remain. Merge Gaming Network, Bovada (formerly Bodog) and the Cake Poker download still offer gaming to players located in America. One of the few other networks to offer said services has now announced plans to pull out of America after a cease and desist order from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
While Everleaf Gaming had dwindled in popularity in the past few years, they still offered gaming to American citizens which netted them some players. Prior to February 2012, the only country that had been prohibited from playing on the Everleaf Gaming Network was Malta. But now both the U.S. and France are prohibited countries.

Read MoreIt might come as a surprise to you to learn that Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson recently announced that he does not support online casino gambling. Adelson, the richest casino executive in the world, heads the Sands. The Sands is the largest publicly traded company in the casino industry. As he is a very prominent figure when it comes to gambling, people are sure to pay attention to this statement.
Adelson has been a Republican Party supporter for a number of years now, so perhaps his stance is not altogether too surprising. After all, he supports Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, who is very much against online casinos for USA players. Kyl was a major factor in passing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) back in 2006.
There are a couple reasons why some people might find it surprising that Adelson doesn’t support online gambling, though. For one, the New York Post reported that he was in support of online poker at the federal level just earlier this year. Secondly, many other casino executives are very much…
Read MoreTwo of the men that were named in the Black Friday indictments have chosen to defend themselves in a very interesting way. Seeking the dismissal of the charges they’ve been accused of, Chad Elie and John Campos have decided to defend themselves based, in part, on viewing poker as a skill game.
Both men are facing serious charges, including money laundering. In total, Elie is facing nine charges while Campos is facing six. The accused men are seeking to have some of their charges thrown out based on the view that online poker isn’t really gambling. They will argue this point in front of a federal judge. Neither man was able to evade authorities after Black Friday as both of them were arrested on April 19th earlier this year.
Campos was the Vice Chairman of Utah based SunFirst Bank. He is accused of aiding the processing of payments for both Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars. If you were a poker player living the United States, chances are that you used to play on one of those sites since a Read More
On April 15th, 2011 the lives of many online poker players in America were changed in a big way as their ability to play on the three biggest online poker rooms (PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet/Absolute Poker) was taken away from them. This forced a great deal of those players to question what their future in online poker was or could be. With the remaining available sites in the United States having little to no player base, the option became clear for some of these players: move abroad.
For a lot of these players, the transition phase can be a daunting task. You have to understand the immigration policy of the country you intend on temporarily relocating to and then you must find a place to live. If you plan on playing on PokerStars, you must then prove to them that you are maintaining a residence in another country. Poker Refugees can help you with all these tasks.
Poker Refugees is a service run through Pocket Fives, a site that ranks tournament players. For a one time…
Read MoreNewly enshrined political group, FairPlayUsa, arrived with considerable fanfare, promising to help usher in an era of fully regulated poker in the United States. Among their board members are former WSOP champion Greg Raymer and WPT talisman Mike Sexton. There has been no definitive output from the group as of yet, but they’ve found their way back into the headlines thanks to a pair of new faces joining the team.
This time they’re adding government experience, rather than respected poker pros. The first is former FBI Director Louis Freeh. The New Jersey native held the position for 8 years, under both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. His high level of expertise on law enforcement issues may help marginalized online poker sites re-enter the U.S. under scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Current federal laws fail to provide U.S. law enforcement vital tools to address illegal internet gambling, enabling a ‘wild-west’ atmosphere,” said Freeh. “I am joining FairPlayUsa to improve this environment by clarifying these laws, better empowering law enforcement agencies to crack down on violators and using licensing…
Read MoreSince Black Friday many indiscretions have been made by a multitude of poker players as the online poker best have been in a state of disruption and change. There have been several stories of turmoil and drama, and there have also been stories of unethical action. The story of Jose “Girah” Macedo is an example of all of the above.
Macedo seemingly came out of nowhere with a true rags to riches story. Dubbed the Portuguese Poker Prodigy, he allegedly used a single €30 deposit and went from $0.10/$0.25 No Limit Hold’em cash games all the way up to $100/$200 No Limit Hold’em. It was quite the feel good story as many prominent players such as Daniel “jungleman” Cates and Haseeb “DogIsHead” Qureshi vouched for his skill and knowledge of the game.
Macedo refused to divulge his screen names in online poker rooms due to instruction from his lawyers. All doubts were silenced, however, because numerous high stakes pros offered to put up six figures worth of action against anyone who didn’t believe Macedo’s story.

Read MoreWith the World Series done and dusted for almost every US poker sites pro, the time has come for them to make a difficult choice. Give up online poker or move abroad. Some have already made the move, opting to emigrate to nearby Canada.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, native Canuck Daniel Negreanu was one of the first to budge. He tweeted that he would be, “on PokerStars.com by Sept in time for WCOOP!” He will be, “getting a place in downtown Toronto. Should be fun!”
As a born and bred Canadian, Negreanu had no trouble moving back into his homeland, but some American pros have had a tougher time gaining entry. Daniel Cates, known by his online handle, Jungleman12, had a move all set, but found himself denied entry to the country.
After tweeting to his 10,000 followers that he was moving to Vancouver in the coming days, he hit a snag in his plans. “In a ridiculous twist, I have been deported from Canada for being an illegal immigrant.” Cates was exaggerating slightly. He had been refused entry to the…
Read MorePeople around the world were shocked to learn that Phil Ivey has decided to sue Tiltware, known for bringing some of the online poker best software. The former Full Tilt pro is seeking $150 million in damages for he claims that his reputation has been tarnished.
Full Tilt has been in hot water ever since the indictments back in April. Their recent problems stem from the fact that they have been unable to repay American players despite reaching a so-called agreement with the Department of Justice. PokerStars players were paid back weeks ago, which makes the situation even worse for this download free poker site.
Ivey is unhappy with the way the site has handled the problems. Moreover, he feels that his “name and reputation have been dragged through the mud” due to “inactivity and indecision”.
To highlight his cause, Ivey will not be playing any WSOP events this year. He mentioned that several people have money tied up and are therefore unable to compete in WSOP events. He feels that it is unfair for him to compete…
Read MoreAs part of their movement for US poker sites, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) organized a D.C. fly-in on May 24th. The hope was to bring as many poker advocates as possible to Capitol Hill to show their support for online poker and stress the need for regulation.
In total around fifty people participated in the rally. The PPA flew twenty-four of its important members out, including state directors. Around 12 regular PPA members also flew out, and another 50 met with district offices in their own states.
John Pappas, the executive director of the PPA, seemed slightly disappointed by the turnout numbers. “Obviously we would have liked to have more players there, but I’m not sure what the PPA could have done more to promote it. We did all we could and those who could make it made it, and we appreciate them being there,” he stated. He did say that the fly-in went very smoothly, however, especially considering it was organized in a matter of weeks.
There should be no doubt that every effort helps when it…
