WSOP 2011 November Nine Day One

The World Series of Poker Main Event has been the pinnacle of tournament poker for quite some time now. It is the ultimate goal of every poker player from beginners to world class professionals on the PKR download. Only nine players a year get a chance to play for the title in November.

This year’s $10,000 WSOP Main Event began with 6,865 players spread out over four Day 1’s and was further thinned out by two Day 2’s. After that there were six more days of play before a player could call themselves one of the “November Nine.” The November Nine was scheduled for 109 days after Day 8 in July.

Bob Bounahra, Sam Holden, Anton Makiievskyi, and Pius Heinz were coming into the final table with 40 big blinds or less. This gave them room, but it meant that they couldn’t sit around for too long. Martin Stazsko began the final table in the pole position with over 80 big blinds.

It took 51 hands until the first bustout occurred. Holden busted by running AJ suited into Ben Lamb’s AK. Holden’s bustout in 9th place meant every player left was guaranteed to become a millionaire due to the payout jump.

Just 8 hands later, Makiievskyi would join Holden on the rail in 8th place. He lost a coinflip against Heinz. And then it only took another 8 hands until Bounahra was also on the rail in 7th place. He was busted by Staszko.

Eoghan O’Dea began the day in 2nd place, but things never really went his way at the final table. He lost a massive pot to Heinz early on, and then he was unable to win an all-in pot against Lamb despite being a favorite. His stack got desperately short, and he was finally eliminated by Staszko in 6th place. Perhaps O’Dea comforted himself by playing real money slots in the Rio?

The trend of eliminations continued as Phil Collins jammed 18 big blinds over Heinz’s raise with A7 suited and was up against 99. Collins had thirteen outs going into the river, but he couldn’t connect and had to settle for 5th place.

The remaining players settled in for a few hours as they tried to determine who the final three would be. Matt Giannetti suffered a crippling beat as his JJ was unable to hold up against Lamb’s A7 suited. A few hands later Lamb finished off Gianetti with KK as he flopped quads to end the hand immediately.

Heinz, Lamb, and Staszko were scheduled to come back two days later to determine who would be crowned 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event champion.
